The Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST-IX) is accepting nominations for the 2018 L’Oreal-UNESCO Awards (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) “For Women in Science”.

The award is open to women scientists all over the world who have made outstanding contributions to scientific advancement in the Life Sciences.

Five prizes of € 100,000 will be awarded in Marc 2018 to five women specialists who represent the following regions: Africa and the Arab States, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and North America.

No paper applications will be considered. Nominations can only be submitted electronically through the online platform: www.forwomeninscience.com

In its bid to bring the gains of science, technology, and innovation (STI) closer to the people to reduce demographic inequality, create opportunities for businesses and employment, and expand the potential for growth in the countryside, the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST-IX) will be conducting “Science for the People (SFTP)” Festivals in key locations in the region.

SFTP is a consolidated effort of DOST to bring S&T products and services to the countryside. This fiesta-inspired event aims to, among others: (1) reach and serve rural community folks, especially in places where regular access to government services is quite challenging; (2) introduce and demonstrate the beneficial applications of DOST technologies, programs, and services, which are all geared toward improving the quality of life in the region; and (3) promote collaborative efforts towards meaningful development through strengthening partnerships between DOST, other line government agencies, local government units (LGUs), private businesses, non-government organizations (NGOs), and local communities.

grupo medica3Among the invited schools in Zamboanga Peninsula, three (3) groups of BS Biology students from the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) qualify for the national search for Outstanding Undergraduate Thesis in Herbal Medicine.

The entries are 1) “Phytochemical screening and study on the antibacterial property of Kalachuchi” by Ms. Fatima Fersayda Ukkoh and Ms. Fatima Ezra Viray; 2) “Synergetic antibacterial effects of Piper betle L. (piper leaf vine) and Areca catechu (areca nut) extracts against common dermal and gastrointestinal tract pathogens” by Mr. Abdelaziz Maldisa and Mr. Cooper Nikko Chavez; and 3) “Cytotoxic and antibacterial activities of the crude secondary metabolites of two mangrove species, Rhizophora apiculata and Rhizophorastylosa, from the Great Sta. Cruz Island, Zamboanga City” by Mr. Mark Phillip Ycaza and Ms. Monique Praico

The DOST-PCHRD Gruppo Medica Award is an annual recognition given to relevant and innovative research work on herbal medicine undertaken by undergraduate students. The award highlights research that can lead to practical and/or commercial applications. It expects to provide the motivation for students with the technical guidance of their faculty advisers, to view undergraduate thesis not merely as an academic exercise, but as an excellent opportunity to contribute to national interest.

The award is open to all undergraduate students from the Colleges of Pharmacy, Chemistry, Nursing, and Arts and Sciences who have completed theses project on medicinal plants. The projects must have been completed within the current school year.

    The winning entries will be receiving 60,000, 40,000, and 20,000 pesos respectively to be announced during the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week Celebration on August 10-12, 2016 in City State Asturias Hotel, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. (DOST IX PRESS RELEASE)

RxBox Device website

The Department of Science and Technology IX in close coordination with UP Manila – National Telehealth Center, will deploy some 58 units of Telehealth Devices, popularly known as “RxBox”, to selected Rural Health Units (RHUs) including Municipal Health Offices (MHOs) and City Health Offices (CHOs) in Zamboanga Peninsula region.

This project is one of the initiatives of DOST under the “Smarter Philippines” program, as well as the Department’s contribution to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on improving maternal and neonatal health services.

The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST IX) announces its successful renewal of ISO 9001:2008 Certification following a two (2) day reassessment and surveillance audit conducted on January 06 & 07, 2014 in Zamboanga City.

The certification (CIP/4068/07/12/552), dated 03 February 2014, and is valid until 02 February 2017, was issued by the Certification International Philippines, Incorporated (CIPI), an internationally renowned ISO certifying body.

The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST-IX), through the Science Education Institute (SEI), announces the availability of SY2015-2016 Science and Technology (S&T) scholarships to the public.

DOST-IX Dir. Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano said applications for the 2015 Science and Technology Scholarship Program are now available to graduating high school seniors who intend to pursue a degree in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

DOST-SEI offers two scholarship programs, RA 7687 Scholarship Program, open to poor, talented and deserving students and the Merit Scholarships Program, for qualified applicants whose families’ socio-economic status exceeds the indicator.

The Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST IX) is pleased to announce the opening of its Science and Technology Information Center (STIC) in its new location at 2/F MCC Building, fronting East Central School and adjacent to Cases Clinic, San Jose Road, this City.

The relocation of the STIC was the consequence of the integration of the rubber laboratory to its existing Regional Standards and Testing Laboratories (RSTL) in Pettit Barracks. The need for the construction of a bigger laboratory required the housing of the S&T Information Center to a location where customers will have better access to S&T resources.

Avail of STARBOOKS now!

With the goal of providing an effective and efficient access to S&T information through the use of information and communications technologies (ICT), the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST IX) in collaboration with DOST-Science & Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) is inviting educational institutions, LGUs, NGOs and private corporations in the region to avail of the DOST-STII STARBOOKS.

STARBOOKS, or the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosk Stations, is a stand alone, onsite research kiosk that provides free access on S&T information for academic and livelihood use.

The Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) is set to organize the Nutrition Communication Network (NUTRICOMNET) in Zamboanga Peninsula region on April 11, 2008 at the Lotus Restaurant, Grand Astoria Hotel, this city. The network will include provincial and regional media practitioners and information officers of various government agencies and private institutions involved in food, nutrition, and health promotion. The local media practitioners and information officers, as disseminators of information, play a significant role as the vital link between the scientists and technologists and the research and technology users.
