In its endeavor to protect Filipino inventors and researchers on their rights over their creations and researches, the DOST IX scheduled a “Forum on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Protection” during the 2017 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) Regional Celebration and the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit (RICE) on 22 November, 2017 at Palacio del Sur, Marcial Garden Hotel, Zamboanga City.

This forum targets to reach out around 60 inventors, creative researchers, student researchers and research advisers within the region.  Among the topics that will be talked about include Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Process of IPR Registration at IPOPHIL and DOST programs and Assistance Relative to Invention and Research Development.

The DOST IX invited speakers from Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) and Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) to provide participants better understanding on the topic and give them the avenue to address their questions and queries directly to the concerned office.

It is expected that after attending this forum, participants will have a clearer and better understanding on their intellectual rights and the programs and services they can avail from the DOST and its service agencies.

The Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST IX) and the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Philippines had recently conducted a series of research writing training-workshops in Mibang Hotel, Dipolog City last October 27-28, 2016.

The series was composed of two training-workshops; the first trained participants in Writing and Presenting Research Proposals, whereas the second focused on Enhancing the Research / Thesis Writing Capabilities of Special Science School Teachers.

As with the recently conducted NAST events in Dipolog last September, both workshops heavily emphasized the importance of research - this time, focusing on its more technical aspects, and on how to streamline collected data for better presentation.

The Katilingban para sa Kalambuan Org. Inc., a non-stock, non-profit organization directed at helping poor and marginalized communities, recently partnered up with The Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST IX) to raise their game against the deadly Dengue virus.

For each week in October, DOST IX visited a different Katilingban community to distribute the Ovicidal Larvicidal Trap or OL Trap: a three-piece kit containing a black cup, a lawanit paddle, and pellets, designed and developed by the DOST-Industrial Technology and Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) to fight dengue by attacking the dengue vector's ability to propagate.

11

A total of around 500 households across 4 Katilingban communities - namely the homeowners associations of "Katilingban", "Kalinaw", "Kalambuan" and "Kinaiyahan" - were oriented and trained in the use of the trap; each of the households received 2 kits, and a year's supply of lawanit paddles and pellets.

Aside from the OL Traps, DOST IX introduced the communities to a different form of anti-dengue technology - one that they could make themselves.

22

Using only a plastic bottle, some tape, sugar, yeast, and hot water, the Katilingban communities learned to create a alternative mosquito trapping tool - one that when used in tandem with the OL Trap, ups the ante against dengue even more.

33

The residents were reminded, however, that these technologies are but tools meant to aid in the fight against the virus. Ultimately, the best and proven way to win the war is by maintaining a clean environment, thus making sure that no place becomes a potential breeding ground for the mosquitoes.

The Best Reason to Introduce Your Child to the World of Robotics

An amalgamation of Science and Engineering, Robotics is an emerging field of technology with limitless potential. It has extensive applications encompassing numerous areas like space and underwater exploration, manufacturing, medicine, and agriculture - just to name a few.

Access to knowledge in the field, however, does not come as easily in our country as it would in others. Thankfully, the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs (PSYSC) will be conducting the 2016 National Children’s Science Interactive Workshop (NCSIW 2016) on December 17-20 in Bataan.

This year, the event will focus on understanding the fundamental concepts, breakthroughs, and current trends in the field of Robotics.

With the theme “Techno-surge: Rebooting the Syndroid System”, the NCSIW aims to promote research and development among elementary students by exposing them to robotics being a field of study and a possible career path. Workshops, exposure trips and a plethora of fun-filled educational activities are but a few of what your child can expect.

Fruit processors to be profitable must have good quality products, attractive packaging and a well-managed business. The efforts to preserve the products and to ensure their quality must begin in the proper selection of fruits and various techniques during processing.

The abundance of fresh tropical fruits in Mindanao and the lack of fruit processing plants in the area inspired the incorporators of Polyfruits Inc. to set up one in 2005. Polyfruits Inc. formally began its operation in 2007 which first processed mango and calamansi fruits. Marketed under the name ‘Zamgo’, the firm now includes durian and cacao tablets in their products. Zamgo has reached local demand centers in the Philippines to include Cebu, Davao and Manila and export markets such as China and Tahiti. Among their products are dried green and yellow mango, pickled mango, mango concentrate, calamansi concentrate and durian jam.

In line with its efforts to increase productivity and competitiveness of the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST IX), through its Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) has recently released the amount of Five Hundred Thousand Pesos (P500,000.00) to implement the project entitled “Upgrading the Quality of Jade’s Cakes, Pastries, and Native Delicacies” situated in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.  The project was an offshoot of the SETUP Orientation conducted by DOST-IX held last May 15, 2012 in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.

Jade’s Cakes, Patries and Catering Services started operation in 2006 as a lechon manok stall.  While producing lechon manok stall, the owner also baked cakes and pastries for some friends and neighbors.  In 2007, with the assistance of Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the firm was able to register their firm.  Its production, particularly on cakes and pastries, was also gradually increased.  With maintained quality of the products and with referrals and good feedbacks from its previous customer, the business ultimately expanded as demand also tremendously increased. Starting 2008, Jade’s has been known as a producer of quality cakes and pastries among local consumers in Bongao and the neighboring towns in Tawi-Tawi. With the growing market demand, the firm needs to upgrade its facility.   Thus, the DOST-IX’s Regional Technical Evaluation Committee (RTEC)   favorably recommended the approval of SETUP assistance.
