Blood pressure monitor – measures the patient’s blood pressure to detect cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) problems especially hypertension, a disease which can also worsen other chronic lifestyle disease conditions.

Pulse oximeter –measures the level of oxygen in the patient’s blood and can help detect lung and cardiovascular problems – leading causes of death among Filipinos.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) – monitors the heart’s movement to pump blood throughout the body, helpful for those with acute and chronic heart problems, including pregnant mothers with cardiovascular problems.

The annual event will feature a myriad of S&T displays from different agencies and organizations working with the DOST.

The Rubber Testing Lab will bring to audiences exhibits called "Elephant Toothpaste" and "Hot Ice". The former - which is not actual toothpaste - involves the production of a large amount of thick, paste-like foam through a chemical reaction. The latter, involves "frozen", but in actuality, crystallized vinegar that produce heat through an exothermic process.

DOST IX's Rubber Testing Lab provides critical support mechanisms for enhancing the competitiveness of the Philippines' rubber industry.

The annual Regional Science and Technology Week or RSTW held by the Department of Science and Technology IX will display LiDAR and LiPAD technologies on July 25-27 at the Zamboanga del Norte Convention and Sports Center in Dipolog City.

The mentioned technologies have been developed to aid in disaster mitigation, adaptation and risk reduction.

LiDAR or Light Detection and Ranging involve the recording of laser pulses emitted across the earth's surface. These recordings are then analyzed and interpreted to generate detailed, high-resolution 3D maps used in flood and hazard simulations.

The application for these maps is not limited for use in disaster modeling. Maps generated through LiDAR may also aid in planning and construction and energy resource mapping.

Acting as the program's safe keeper, LiPAD stores, manages, and disseminates the data generated through LiDAR.

In line with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-IX), a total of 30 underweight children in Zamboanga Sibugay province are recipients of the 3-month nutri-feeding program of the Department.   The feeding program in Sanito, Ipil, Sibugay was also part of the celebration of the National Nutrition Month, which is conducted annually by the National Nutrition Council, in collaboration with the local government units and line government agencies.
In the last Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) celebration held last July 4-9 in Dipolog City, the DOST-IX also implemented a nutri-feeding activity in Nabilid barangay, Roxas Municipality, Zamboanga del Norte. Around 31 underweight children are also beneficiaries of the 3-month feeding program.
Specifically, the nutri-feeding program involves the provision of 3-month supply of nutri-booster cereals. Nutri-booster is a protein-energy rich food for children from 6 months old and above. It is made from rice, mungbean, sesame and soybean. It can adequately provide the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of a gram protein per kilogram bodyweight per day.   Nutri-booster is one of the various products assisted by the DOST-IX through its Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).  The daily feeding for 3-months is being handled by the Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) and Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) of the chosen barangay-recipients.
Baseline data on nutritional status of the children-recipients were gathered and will be monitored and analyzed on a monthly basis. The need to measure the progress or impact of the feeding program is very crucial to determine the effectiveness of the feeding program. Should there be a need to further extend the supply of nutri-booster to attain the recommended weight of a particular child, the DOST-IX will continue to intervene to achieve better outcomes.
