45 third year BS Biology students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines – College of Science rejoiced as they were set to receive Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS).

The JLSS is a program of the DOST – Science Education Institute under the Republic Act No. 7687 or the “Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994”, R.A. No. 10612 or the “Fast-Tracked Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 2013”, and Merit Scholarship Program. It aims to help and support the growing number of aspiring scientists and engineers in the country.

Before receiving the said scholarship, applicants took DOST-JLSS examination, which was administered on November 19, 2017.

Scholars under the R.A. 10612 are expected to teach science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in the basic education level, ideally in their home regions, as their return of service. While, graduates of the R.A. 7687 and Merit Programs are required to work equivalent to the number of years they enjoyed the scholarship program, along their fields of specialization anywhere in the country.

The BS Biology qualifiers will receive their scholarship privileges for two years which include tuition subsidy, monthly stipend, book allowance, and more. The passers of the Merit Program will receive the same benefits except for the monthly stipend that would be based on the qualifier’s socio-economic status.

Overall, there are 4,529 students nationwide who passed the 2017 DOST-SEI JLSS Program. These students are expected to serve and contribute to the developing field of Science and Technology in the Philippines.
