07 February 2017 - Stakeholders of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Food Safety Program convened to put the finishing touches before moving toward the program's implementation stage.

Tying the results of their discussions during a meeting on the DOST Integrated Halal Program held earlier (details on, Dr. Ma. Patricia Azanza, Director of the DOST- Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) and Dr. Anthony C. Sales, DOST XI Regional Director, led the team in laying out the details for the Food Safety Program's 4 major components:

• Research and Development (R&D) - which will involve meetings with the Undersecretaries of partner government agencies and non-government organizations for the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) integration, and other technical aspects like matrix and contaminant prioritization, and the cascading / acquisition of existing / new technologies.

• Knowledge Transfer - which will include policy development, advocacy programs, and the deployment of technologies identified through R&D.

• Human Resource Development - Develop methods to capacitate DOST personnel in addressing issues concerning food safety.

• Laboratory Testing - Enhance laboratory capabilities to test and identify emerging food contaminants and pathogens.

The team, made up of members from the Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST-IX), the DOST-Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI), DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), and the DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), envision that by 2022, the program will be able to live up to their guiding theme: "Safe and culturally acceptable food for everyone. By everyone. Through Science, Technology and Innovation."
