The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-IX will be deploying 10 STARBOOKS (Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Stations) units - a digital library filled to the brim with science and technology resources in selected elementary and secondary schools at the Municipality of Josefina, Zamboanga del Sur in 2017.
The deployment of the 10 units to recipient schools was finalized during the meeting between the DOST-IX team (led by Regional Director Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano) and municipal mayor Catalino A. Adapon, thru the vice mayor Teresito D. Villas. The STARBOOKS deployment formspart of the Basic Education and Literacy entry point of the DOST national program known as Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) for Josefina Municipality, among others.
STARBOOKS currently holds 500,000 titles of digitized journals, serial publications, reference materials, annual reports, theses and dissertations, technical and project reports, and directories of DOST-STII’s library materials.
As a stand-alone library, it also hosts the entire Britannica Encyclopedia 9.0 edition, which gives students greater access to much needed information. The STARBOOKS’ built-in server can provide simultaneous access to users who can have the digital materials printed but not copied.
Those interested with STARBOOKS will be pleased to know that the installation of STARBOOKS is free; local government units, non-government organizations, and educational institutions only need to send to DOST-IX a request letter and provide their own computer units for the installation ofthe software.
