The Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST IX) is pleased to announce the opening of its Science and Technology Information Center (STIC) in its new location at 2/F MCC Building, fronting East Central School and adjacent to Cases Clinic, San Jose Road, this City.

The relocation of the STIC was the consequence of the integration of the rubber laboratory to its existing Regional Standards and Testing Laboratories (RSTL) in Pettit Barracks. The need for the construction of a bigger laboratory required the housing of the S&T Information Center to a location where customers will have better access to S&T resources.

The STIC caters to the scientific and technological information needs of the general public. Aside from maintaining a wide array of collections on various S&T library materials, the center offers assistance on information / literature search and retrieval through the use of the Internet. Access to various online S&T databases and electronic libraries can also be facilitated. The center also offers vast resources of livelihood technologies in various formats which can be helpful to existing and would-be entrepreneurs.

According to Mr. Martin A. Wee, ARD for Technical Services, aside from the S&T references, the center also showcases the use of the Science and Technology Academic and Research-based Openly Kiosk Stations, or STARBOOKS. Also known as DOST’s Science Digital Library, this stand alone onsite research kiosk provides free access on S&T information for academic and livelihood use.

Also to be featured in this new location is the Community e-Center (CeC) project of the DOST Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO) which will be operational as soon as the computer units and other equipment are in place. This government’s program seeks to establish new CeCs in municipalities where there are no shared internet access facilities, transform existing school computer laboratories and Internet cages, where feasible, to become CeCs and enhance and strengthen existing CeCs.

At the moment, DOST IX has adopted strategies to intensify and strengthen promotion of its S&T services to its diverse and increasing number of customers to include, among others, students, researchers, professionals and entrepreneurs. Customers may avail the services, free of charge, every Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

For more information, interested parties may call the STIC at telephone numbers (062) 955-3654(062) 955-3654 and look for the STIC Manager, Ms. Thelma E. Diego or STIC Staff, Mr. Rovelin T. Enriquez Jr. (DOST IX Press Release)
