A total of 136 teachers and principals representing 49 schools in Isabela City attended the Orientation on the use Ovicidal / Larvicidal (OL) Traps held on October 30, 2012 at the Office of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, City of Isabela, Basilan Province. The Orientation was conducted by the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST IX) in collaboration with the Office of Sangguniang Panlungsod, Isabela City.
The OL Trap is a simple device developed by the DOST-Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI). It attracts the dengue-carrying female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and kills the eggs trapped in the kit. The developed mosquito trap offers a simple, cheap, and efficient tool for surveillance and control of these mosquitoes. Some 1,650 OL trap kits and OL pellets to cover six (6) months deployment were distributed in Isabela City. The kits will cover 526 classrooms of selected 49 schools in both elementary and secondary levels. The teachers have agreed to install the OL traps in their respective classrooms on November 6, 2012.
The deployment of OL traps was in response to Isabela City’s Resolution No. 12-4514 adopted on June 14, 2012, requesting for the provision of OL trap kits in all primary and secondary schools in the City of Isabela. The Resolution was sponsored by Honorable James Abner S. Rodriguez and Co-Sponsored by Honorable Moumar L. Muarip, attested by the Honorable Abdulbaki J. Ajibon, Isabela City Vice Mayor and Presiding Officer.
Meanwhile, over 240 public elementary and high schools in Zamboanga Peninsula have installed two (2) OL trap kits in each classroom. The deployment, surveillance and monitoring started last June 4, 2012 and is expected to end in March 2013. (DOST-IX Press Release)
