Started as passion in cake making in 1992, Ms. Lolita T. Guia, proprietor of Chokie’s Cakes and Refreshment located in Poblacion North, Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte is now in the process of acquiring state-of-the-art bakeshop equipment through the project entitled “Equipment Modernization of Chokie’s Cakes for the Production of Cakes and Rolls” funded through the Department of Science and Technology - Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (DOST-SETUP) amounting to One Hundred Seventy Five Thousand Pesos (P175,000.00).
Through the years, Ms. Guia saw the potential of her business. At the beginning, she started to receive orders and borrowed traditional oven from her friend. Since then, she started the business with 6 ovens and later bought another oven from the late Engr. Teves. She also attended trainings on cake decorating, culinary, baking and pastry through formal and non-formal education. The firm then became progressive, thus intends to expand through the assistance of the DOST-SETUP.
Specifically, DOST-IX interventions involve the acquisition of baking oven (6 planchs), 5 quartz kitchen aid mixer, airbrush gun and compressor, and cake chiller. Consequently, the company is expected to 1) increase volume of production by at least 20 %; 2) develop more cake variants which would result to increase in sales; 3) upgrade processing facilities to produce good quality of products, thus decreasing up to 99% rejects; 4) expand the area of distribution; and 5) generate additional income and employment.
SETUP, a flagship program of DOST, is a nationwide strategy to encourage and assist micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in implementing technological innovations and improvements in their operations to boost their productivity and competitiveness. (DOST IX PRESS RELEASE)
