Some 90 representatives from different educational institutions, government offices, private corporations and some members of the Press, from Region IX attended the “Launching of the DOST-STII’s STARBOOKS in Zamboanga Peninsula” held last November 23, 2011 at Marcian Garden Hotel in the City.
STARBOOKS is the first Philippine Science Digital Library developed by the Science and Technology Information Institute (STII) of DOST. The deployment STARBOOKS to some public schools in Region IX was made possible through the initiative and efforts of the Regional Information Technology and E-Commerce Committee (RITECC-IX) with funding from the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX.
The recipient-schools of the of STARBOOKS project were all present in the event. Ms. Melanie Minez, School Principal of the Regional Science High School, expressed her gratitude during her acceptance speech to RITECC-IX, DOST-IX and DOST-STII, as partner agencies in initiating the piloting of STARBOOKS in Zamboanga Peninsula for the opportunity of being one of the nine school-recipients of the STARBOOKS system in Region IX. Other recipients of STARBOOKS are the ZCHS (Main), Ayala National High School, Vitali National High School, Zamboanga del Norte National High School, Zamboanga del Sur National High School, La Dicha National High School and Basilan State College. These schools were selected based on the criteria set by the RITECC-IX members.

DOST-STII’s STARBOOKS
Director Raymund E. Liboro graced the event and delivered the message of DOST Secretary, Hon. Mario G. Montejo. Meanwhile, DOST-IX Regional Director Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano expressed her delight in the overwhelming response of the participants with the DOST-STII’s innovation. Also, Ms. Maureene F. Bello, RITECC-IX Chair, thanked DOST-IX and the recipient schools for their commitment and support in the maintenance and sustainability of the project. Moreover, the partner agencies look forward to catering to other schools interested to avail of the STARBOOKS system.
During the launching, Mr. Alfon Narquita, a technical resource person from DOST-STII, gave an orientation on the use of the STARBOOKS system. He also discussed the different features and capabilities of the system and facilitated a hands-on activity of the participants. (DOST-IX PRESS RELEASE)
