Some 30 participants from different MSMEs and LGUs attended the recently concluded Forum on the Production and Technology Transfer of the FNRI-Developed Complimentary Snack Foods held last November 17, 2011 at the Guillermo Hotel, Pagadian City.

The forum headed by the DOST’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), in collaboration with DOST-IX, aimed to fast track the adoption and commercialization of the FNRI-developed complimentary snack foods. This goal is in line with DOST’s effort to promote S&T based interventions to address malnutrition problem.

Ms. Joyce R. Tobias, FNRI Supervising Science Research Specialist served as the resource speaker during the said event. Also present in the occasion was Mr. Ebenezer T. Tulog, Provincial S&T Director of Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC).

Among the DOST-FNRI developed snack foods presented during the forum were the extruded snack foods curls such as rice-mongo, corn-mongo, rice-soy, corn-soy, and rice-mongo-skim milk, and the expanded snack food (kroepeck/crunchies/chips) like rice-mongo rice-mongo-shrimps; rice-soy, rice-fish protein concentrate (FPC) corn-mongo corn-soy squash-corn, and squash (recipes).

5The FNRI-DOST is the principal research arm of the Philippine government in food and nutrition. It is mandated to conduct research that defines the citizenry’s nutritional status, with reference particularly to the malnutrition problem, its causes and effects and identify alternative solutions to them.
