The Regional Information Technology and E-commerce Committee IX (RITECC IX) will be launching the DOST-STII’s STARBOOKS on November 23, 2011 (9:00 am) at the Marcian Garden Hotel, Zamboanga City. The STARBOOKS project is funded by the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST IX) under its Grants-In-Aid (GIA) Program. RITECC- IX is a special committee on ICT under the Regional Development Council IX with Ms. Maureene F. Bello as chair.

STARBOOKS, or the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosk Stations,  is a stand alone, onsite research kiosk that provides free access on S&T information for academic and livelihood use. It is aimed at providing schools with an effective and efficient access to S&T information; create and enhance interest in the field of science and technology which may increase the number of students enrolling in S&T courses; encourage great and curious minds to develop new ideas, inventions and innovations; and stimulate or inspire one’s capacity to get involved in research and entrepreneurship.

Director Raymund E. Liboro of the Department of Science and Technology – Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) is expected to grace the occasion together with Dir. Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano of DOST-IX. Meanwhile, a technical resource person from DOST-STII, Mr. Alfon Narquita, will conduct an orientation on the features and capabilities of the STARBOOKS System and facilitate a hands-on activity on the use of the STARBOOKS system. Ms. Maureene F. Bello, Chair of RITECC IX will discuss the overview of the STARBOOKS project. Representatives from the different schools in Zamboanga Peninsula are also expected to attend the said event.

The eight (8) recipients of the project, selected educational institutions in Region IX as identified by the RITECC-IX are;

Zamboanga City:

  1. Zamboanga City High School (Main);
  2. Regional Science High School;
  3. Ayala National High School; and
  4. Vitali National High School

Zamboanga del Norte:

  1. Zamboanga del Norte National High School

Zamboanga del Sur:

  1. Zamboanga del Sur National High School

Zamboanga Sibugay:

  1. Zamboanga Sibugay National High School; and
  2. La Dicha National High School

STARBOOKS is the first Philippine Science Digital Library developed by the Science and Technology Information Institute (STII) of DOST.
