The Provincial Science and Technology Office – Zamboanga Sibugay Province (PSTO-ZSP) of the Department of Science and Technology – Regional Office No. IX (DOST-IX) wraps up its year-end performance for 2022 relative to the Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Program, revealing 14 projects approved for funding. These projects, which focus on a range of scientific and technological areas, have a combined value of ₱10,927,665.00.

The DOST-IX GIA program aims to harness the country’s scientific and technological capabilities by providing financial grants to S&T programs and projects to spur sustainable economic growth, particularly in the Zamboanga Sibugay Province. Among the approved projects categorized by sectors are Research and Development; Community-based; Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST); S&T Services and Promotion; Support to Industry / MSME; and Support to Human Resource Development / Education.

One of the major sectors represented in this program is community-based. With several initiatives on technology transfer that involve the establishment of technology-based businesses through the provision of technology, equipment, and training to the beneficiaries, such as organized groups and LGUs, the projects contributed to productivity improvement and economic growth for the people of Zamboanga Sibugay.

Another significant sector represented in this program is S&T Services and Promotion. With initiatives to increase awareness and appreciation of technological innovations and interventions through radio promotion, S&T engagement and projects—such as the planned establishment of a science center in the province, the first in Region IX—are expected to greatly contribute to intensifying awareness, leading to a more responsive customer or audience and strong linkages with stakeholders and partners.

The Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program is also well presented. With several initiatives facilitating the transfer of technologies in the areas of education, health and nutrition, water and sanitation, disaster risk reduction, and industry development or livelihood, the program alleviates poverty in the identified remote communities.

Overall, the DOST's accomplishments on the implementation of the said program reflect the organization's sincere dedication to strengthening S&T participation, technology transfer and utilization, human resources development, information dissemination, advocacy, and linkages for a better and more quality life for Sibugaynons.
