In addition to serving customers within the region, the DOST IX - Regional Standards and Testing Laboratories (RSTL) also provides calibration services to customers in neighboring cities. It is essential to calibrate measuring equipment on a regular basis in order to determine its true improbability and get results that are reliable and consistent.
The DOST-IX metrology laboratory carries out calibrations for mass and volume. Vehicle tanks, proving tanks, calibrating buckets, and storage tanks were all subject to volumetric calibrations. The mass calibration covers the calibration of scales and tests weights from 2 kg to 50 kg OIMLClass M.
Just recently, calibration training for its personnel was requested by the Ministry of Trade, Investments and Tourism (MTIT) BARMM. The 1-day training was held at the Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City, by DOST-IX- Science Research Specialist II, Engr. Kevin Karl R. Ramiso.
The objective of the activity is to capacitate the 12 personnel from Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi- Tawi on legal metrology and to emphasize the significance of accurate weighing scales to better serve the consumers in the Bangsamoro Region.
Among the topics discussed by Engr. Ramiso were the Spring scale verifications (PNS 238:1989) or the Standard procedure for the verification, inspection, and sealing of weighing scales; RA 11706 (Timbangan ng Bayan); and the Proper handling and maintenance of spring scales.
Additionally, the training aims to emphasize the value of ethical business practices in the calibration of industrial weighing scales for a range of applications as well as the acceptable range of scale error readings in the marketplace. The event also aims to raise public awareness of the value of calibration, which covers subjects like consumer protection, moral business conduct, and public health and safety.
