The Department of Science and Technology – Regional Office No. IX (DOST-IX), through its Provincial Science and Technology Office of the Zamboanga Sibugay Province (PSTO-ZSP), successfully conducted training on the operation and maintenance of the Styro-Plastic Shredder and Densifier Technology of the Local Government Unit of Imelda, Zamboanga Sibugay.

The training is supplemental to the DOST-GIA approved project for the municipality, titled “Improving the Solid Waste Management Program of LGU-Imelda through Plastic Shredder and Densifier Technology”. Having the above-mentioned technologies developed by DOST’s Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI), technology experts Mr. Marvin P. Mendoza and Benjamin A. Santos were invited to provide not only technical know-hows on the control measures and operations of the equipment, but also provide techniques and insights in processing plastic wastes into value added products – customized, plastic bricks, among others (see photos). Among the trainees included were LGU-Imelda’s Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer (MENRO) Jerry Joquiño and two (02) of his staff namely Michael Langit and Julieto Cubol.

With the S&T interventions, the LGU-Imelda is expected to effectively implement the solid waste management program, manage non-biodegradable wastes disposal, produce bricks out of densified plastic wastes, generate employment and to be a RA 9003 compliant municipality.

The Grants-In-Aid (GIA) Program of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-GIA) aims to harness the country's scientific and technological capabilities by providing financial grants to S&T programs/projects to spur sustainable economic growth for the country.
