DOST eyes 235 more Balik Scientists 'til 2022

MANILA -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) eyes to tap 235 more "Balik Scientists" from 2018-2022, DOST Secretary Fortunato Dela Peña told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Friday.
Balik Scientists are science and technology experts residing abroad and who are contracted to return to the Philippines to work and use their expertise in the country.
Since the Balik Scientist Program's establishment in 1975 up to December 2017, the Philippines has had a total of 567 Balik Scientists.
The DOST targets 41 Balik Scientists in 2018, and increase this number by three each year until 2022.
DOST ZamPen Native Chicken brings Hope to Inmates in Zamboanga

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) recently released another inmate from the San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF) in San Ramon, Zamboanga City. The released inmate was trained with skills and know-how on native chicken production by the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) ZamPen Native Chicken Breeding Operation Project.

Lower House Committee on S&T holds Public Hearing to revisit DOST Provincial Centers Act in Dapitan City

The Committee on Science and Technology of the House of Representatives conducted a public hearing to revisit Republic Act No. 6959, otherwise known as “An Act Establishing Provincial Centers for Science and Technology in all Provinces of the Philippines and Appropriating Funds Therefore” at the Dapitan City Hall in Zamboanga del Norte on March 15-16, 2018.

Prof. Fortunato T. de la Peña, the secretary of Science and Technology recent came to Zamboanga City to visit DOST supported projects on 13 March 2018. Sec. de la Peña visited various projects at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU), Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST), and the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), the largest R&D Center for coconut research in the country.

DOST IX releases 5 Million Pesos Worth of Assistance to MSMEs in Zamboanga Sibugay

The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST-IX) conducted a series of activities on March 06-09, 2018 to promote its flagship program, the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP). Two (02) SETUP orientations were conducted – one in the municipality of Kabasalan and another in Imelda, Zamboanga Sibugay on March 06 and 08 2018, respectively. Said events were participated by over 60 participants coming from corporations, cooperatives, and other business entities in the province. Also present during the events were officials from the municipalities as well as representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
