To strengthen the agency’s campaign on research and development, the Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST-IX) recently held a 2-day symposium on research awareness and enhancement for the senior high school students of Titay National High School in Zamboanga Sibugay Province.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) will conduct a two-day Regional Consultative Workshop on Research and Technology Generation for Local Development in Dipolog City on September 20-21, 2016.

The workshop - which is primarily directed towards Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), R&D institutions, and industries - is part of the project Evaluation and Improvement of the Research Publication and IP Productivity of the National R&D System, which aims to promote the use of science, technology and innovation for inclusive development.

NAST has already began moving towards this goal, and has been conducting capability building activities that discuss research and development enabling and support mechanisms, explore regional development plans and the role of DOST R&D consortia in regional development, identify the flagship researches and projects along with future plans of action, develop a stakeholders map for R&D, and develop plans with parallel timelines on how to manage knowledge transfer of research and projects to local development.

The Department of Science and Technology and EmTech Asia have recently began the search for the 2017 MIT Technology Review's Innovators.

Also known as TR35, the call for nominations goes out to young innovators under the age of 35 who have developed new technologies or have creative ways of applying existing technologies to solve problems.

Listed below is the selection criteria:

1. Nominees must be 35 or under as of October 1 2017. They must be citizens or current residents (including students) of one of the following countries:

The Department of Science and Technology – IX and Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) is holding the 2015 Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits (RICE) at the Centro Latino, Paseo del Mar, Zamboanga City with 87 entries vying for six (6) categories.

“We are conducting this very significant event to give recognition to inventors and researchers,” said DOST IX Regional Director Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano.  The science agency believes that Filipinos are not short for ideas, and the DOST is here to support local innovative ideas that work and can help the country, she stated.

The Department of Science and Technology - IX invites students, researchers, inventors, professionals and the general public to take part in the 2015 Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits (RICE) on September 17-19, at Centro Latino, Paseo del Mar, Zamboanga City.   Admission is free.

A total of 1,258 aspiring applicants took the qualifying exam for the 2015 DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarship held on September 21 in five (5) test centers in Zamboanga Peninsula.

“The examination was conducted simultaneously all over the country where more than 41,000 high school students vie for 4,000 scholarship slots” stated Dir. Brenda Nazareth-Manzano, DOST IX Regional Director.

In Zamboanga Peninsula, the test centers were:  Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City; Dipolog City Medical Center, Dipolog City; Chandler Suites, Pagadian City; Basilan State College, Isabela City; and Sibugay Hotel, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay. Test centers were able to cater 100% cities and municipalities within region.

With the aim to help reduce the population of mosquitoes carrying dengue virus, as well as in increasing dengue awareness of the public, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Department of Education (DepEd)  deploys the Ovicidal / Larvicidal (OL) Trap in public schools in the country.

The OL trap which is developed by the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) of DOST, is a simple device made of ordinary plastic tumbler, black color, and a strip of lawanit board measuring 1 X 6.5 X ½ inches.  The black color tumbler and moist lawanit become an attractive nest for the mosquitoes.  The all-natural mosquito attractant solution is 85% effective in killing the eggs and larvae of the mosquitoes within seven (7) days duration.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) IX, through the Science Education Institute (SEI), announces the availability of scholarships to Junior Level college students college.

DOST-IX Dir. Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano said applications for the 2014 Junior Level  Science Scholarship are now open to third year colleges students who are enrolled in priority science and technology (S&T) courses and are willing to teach in the secondary schools in the Philippines.

Applicants to the scholarship program must be a regular third year college student in an identified priority S&T course in any of SUC or private university; and have a general weighted average of at least 83% (or its equivalent) in his/her first and second years in college.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – IX invites college students engaged in computer science, environmental science and meteorology to join the NOWCASTING COMPETITION.

“Nowcasting” comprises the detailed description of current weather along with forecasts obtained by extrapolation from the current time to six hours ahead. Using the latest radar, satellite and observational data as input information for developing accurate weather “nowcast”, the competition participants will develop a computer program and/or set of algorithms that will automate data analysis and the creation of small-scale weather systems affecting Metro Manila.

The  Department of Science and Technology -  Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), in collaboration with the DOST Regional Office No. IX, is conducting a regional dissemination forum on the results of the  “2011 Survey on the Updating of the Nutritional Status of Selected Filipinos” on 28 September 2012 (8:00am – 2:00pm) at the Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City.    

The activity aims to update key stakeholders in the government and private sectors involved in food, nutrition and health programs on the survey results.  Further, it is hoped that the survey results could be used to recommend possible action agenda in the local policy-making and program planning.

Since its launching last November 23, 2011 in Zamboanga Peninsula, a total of 18 school-libraries and learning resource centers in Zamboanga Peninsula region have availed the STARBOOKS, or the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosk Stations. The STARBOOKS,  is the first Philippine Science Digital Library developed by the Science and Technology Information Institute (STII) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The STARBOOKS, is a stand alone, onsite research kiosk that provides free access on S&T information for academic and livelihood use.  The mobile library differs from other library portals as it does not require Internet connectivity to deliver information to its users.  The project is aimed at providing Filipinos with relevant and latest information on science and technology.  Users can access thousands of books, journals, scientific researches, technical and annual reports and other latest data and information contained at the DOST’s Science Information Network (SciNeT), Philippine eLib project sources, freely-available online resources, and subscribed databases.

In an effort to promote Zamboanga City as the next target of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies, some 300 stakeholders composed of businessmen, academe, national government agencies, local government units,  ICT   professionals / enthusiasts,  and private individuals will converge in the 2012 ZamPen ICT Conference & Trade Exhibit : An ICTO Roadshow on September 26, 2012,  at Astoria Plaza, Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City.

Goodies Milk Products is a family enterprise which started in 2007 in Dipolog City.  The firm engages in the production and processing of fresh milk and other processed milk products.  As one of the recipients of National Dairy Authority (NDA) program, the firm received cows from New Zealand.  Started with only four (4) cows in 2008, subsequently increased and now the enterprise has a total of 15 cows.  The main products of the firm include fresh milk and milk bars, which have been making very good business for the company.  Among the outlets of the firm are schools, canteens, and pasalubong centers.

The increasing demand for the products encouraged the firm to expand its current production facility through the support of the Department of Science and Technology – Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (DOST-SETUP).  As an initial step in providing technical assistance, DOST-IX conducted a Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) of the firm.  As a result, the project entitled “Upgrading of Processing Facility of Goodies Milk Products” received financial assistance amounting to Four Hundred Twenty Six Thousand Pesos (P426,000.00) to cover the acquisition of needed production equipment such as  1) 1 unit stainless steel table; 2) 1 unit pasteurizer of 80 liter capacity; 3) 1 unit of refilling tank at 120 liter capacity; 4) 1 unit upright freezer; and 5) 1 unit upright chiller.

Profound interest in welding and fabrication works during his college days and the experience gained in the renovation of his mother’s residence, pushed Mr. Rolando O. Tacliad to start business in 2008, named as “Dod’s Metal Works and Fabrication”.  The shop, with an area of 340 sq.m., is located at Barangay Obay, Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte.  The initial equipment used in the operation was provided by Mr. Tacliad’s sister who is based in Germany.  Currently, the firm provides services on metal and iron works to include fabrication of farm machineries, food processing equipment, among others.

With the increasing orders for iron and metals works and being a member of the Zamboanga del Norte Researchers and Inventors Association, Inc., Mr. Tacliad encouraged to expand his business through the Department of Science and Technology – Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (DOST-SETUP).  During the conduct of the Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) of the firm, it was determined that the shop’s main technology gap is the absence of lathe machine.

Started as passion in cake making in 1992, Ms. Lolita T. Guia, proprietor of  Chokie’s Cakes and Refreshment located in Poblacion North, Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte is now in the process of acquiring state-of-the-art bakeshop equipment through the project entitled “Equipment Modernization of Chokie’s Cakes for the Production of Cakes and Rolls” funded through the  Department of Science and Technology -  Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (DOST-SETUP) amounting to One Hundred Seventy Five Thousand Pesos (P175,000.00).

Through the years, Ms. Guia saw the potential of her business.  At the beginning, she started to receive orders and borrowed traditional oven from her friend. Since then, she started the business with 6 ovens and later bought another oven from the late Engr. Teves.  She also attended trainings on cake decorating, culinary, baking and pastry through formal and non-formal education.  The firm then became progressive, thus intends to expand through the assistance of the DOST-SETUP.

KRAM’s Food Products, a peanut butter processing SME located at  Padre Ramon Extension, Estaka, Dipolog City, received assistance from the Department of Science and Technology - Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (DOST-SETUP) for their project entitled  “Upgrading of Peanut Butter Processing Facility”.    The innovation system support assistance amounted to One Hundred Twenty Thousand Pesos (P120,000.00).

Low production existing equipment prompted the firm to avail of DOST-IX’s support.  Through the project, the firm is set to acquire two (2) units of peanut grinder, two (2) units of stainless steel table, peanut roaster, and biomass stove.   DOST IX also conducted trainings on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Basic Sanitation and Hygiene to the company’s workforce.  With these interventions, the firm is expected to 1) produce 30 % more than the current production, which will result to 1,008 more peanut butter jars a year;  2) increase sales by 30 %; 3) generate additional employment; 4) improve quality of products through adherence to good manufacturing practices (GMP); and 5) acquire License to Operate from Food and Drug Authority (FDA).

The Office of the Deputy Speaker, MARIA ISABELLE CLIMACO, in close coordination with Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST-IX), distributed a total of 12,000 Ovicidal/Larvicidal (OL) trap kits to 11 barangays in Zamboanga City. Officials of Barangay San Roque, Sta. Maria, Tumaga, Maasin, Recodo, Calarian, Pasonanca, Malagutay, Sinunuc, Tugbungan and Campo Islam attended the orientation/training conducted by the DOST-IX at the Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School (DPLMHS) last August 17. This activity is in support of the project “DOST OL-Trap System Nationwide Roll-out” spearheaded by DOST.

Over 6,000 households in the 11 barangays will benefit from this project. Each of the household received two (2) OL trap kits and a supply of the organic pellets for six (6) months. Barangay coordinators or sanitary inspectors were assigned to monitor and record OL Traps that show positive for the presence of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The data will be used to compute the OL trap index of each barangay, which may serve as an early warning signal to pre-empt any impending dengue outbreaks.

Are you a graduating high school student intending to pursue courses on basic science, mathematics or engineering? If yes, you are encouraged to avail of the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) undergraduate scholarships. Acceptance of application is now open until October 21, 2011.

DOST-SEI offers two scholarship programs, the Merit Scholarships Program and RA 7687 Scholarship Program, open to poor, talented and deserving students. The awardees shall be selected on the basis of their performance in the S&T Scholarship examination that will be conducted on 20 November 2011. The tentative venues for the examinations are WMSU-ILS Social Hall at Normal Road Baliwasan, Zamboanga City (for applicants of Zamboanga City and Jolo), Zamboanga del Norte National High School, Pagadian City Teacher’s Center, and Claret School of Isabela.

With the goal of providing an effective and efficient access to S&T information through the use of information and communications technologies (ICT), the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST IX) has recently released a grant to the Regional Information Technology and E-Commerce Committee (RITECC-IX) to carry out the project Piloting of STARBOOKS in Selected Schools / Libraries in Zamboanga Peninsula Region.” The grant, amounting to P 760,324.00is funded under the DOST Grants-in-aid (GIA) program. RITECC- IX is a special committee on ICT under the Regional Development Council IX.

As a key strategic measure to promote innovation and creativity, the Department of Science and Technology-IX, in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-IX) and the Intellectual Property Office Philippines (IPOPHL) is conducting a Seminar on Intellectual Property (IP) and Patent Drafting on September 21-23, 2011 atTeracota Fastfood and Restaurant, Tumaga, Zamboanga City.

 

Some 50 participants composed of local inventors, researchers and professionals have confirmed to attend the 3-day event.

Interested in Peanut Processing ?

Want to learn techniques on peanut processing ? If yes, come and register as a participant to the DOST-sponsored Training-Workshop on Peanut Processing which will be held on October 1-2, 2008 at the DOST IX Office, Pettit Barracks, this city.

Participants for the 2-day training are expected to learn techniques on making peanut butter, peanut brittle, peanut sauce, and greaseless peanut. Experts from the DOST’s Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) in Manila will come over to Zamboanga to serve as trainers.
