The Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST-IX) had recently launched two (2) websites to aid in the mitigation and reduction of risk during disasters.

Developed by DOST-IV A (CALABARZON), the HaNDA or Hazard Notification, Dissemination and Awareness website is an ICT-enabled Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) system used in the gathering and dissemination of disaster-related updates, the monitoring of early warning devices, and notification of local government units (LGUs).

The rubber nanosensor technology, which can differentiate cup lumps formed using battery solution from the recommended formic/acetic acid, was tested in Zamboanga Peninsula recently. This was conducted by the De La Salle University (DLSU) and the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).

Regional Invention and Contest Exhibit 2015

 

The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST IX) invites inventors, makers, designers, creative researchers, students from Region IX to participate in the 2015 Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits (RICE) which will be held on 15-17 September 2015 at the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), Zamboanga City.

            DOST IX Regional Director Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano said that RICE is a nationwide activity conducted in different regions to recognize the indispensability of the Filipino inventors in the Philippine society and in the landscape of national economic development. The invention contest is aimed at motivating inventors to use their inventive capability by competing for cash awards. The contest serves as the elimination / qualifying round for the National Invention Contest, pursuant to Section 4 of the Republic Act No. 7459 also known as “Inventors and Invention Incentives Act of the Philippines”.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has extended application for the 2015 DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarship Examination until August 29, 2014.

The scholarship is open to high school students with high aptitude in science and technology.

The two types of scholarships being offered are the RA 7687 and Merit scholarship programs. Scholarships in BS degree programs will be awarded qualifiers planning to pursue priority fields in basic and applied sciences, engineering and science teaching.

Secondary senior students who have qualified for the college scholarship exam of the Science Education Institute (SEI) may now access a free online reviewer in preparation for the 2015 S&T Undergraduate Scholarship Examination on September 21, this year.

The Philippine Society of Young Science Clubs (PSYSC), in coordination with the Department of Science and Technology-IX (DOST-IX), invites science club members to join the National Science Clubs Summit (SUMMIT) on September 7-8, 2013 at the Dipolog Medical Center – Science High School of Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), in a Memorandum dated August 22, 2013 signed by Science Education Institute (SEI) Director Filma G. Brawner, had extended the deadline for filling of applications and submission of requirements for the 2014 DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarship Examination until August 28, 2013 due to the suspension of classes caused by heavy rainfall and flooding in Metro Manila and several provinces in Luzon.

Started as a Farmers Irrigators Association in 1978, now Salug Valley Compact Farming System Multi-purpose Cooperative (SAVACOMPAS) is composed of farmers who are agrarian reform beneficiaries with cluster members of seven (7) compact farmers in the municipalities of Molave, Mahayag, Ramon Magsaysay and Tambulig in Zamboanga del Sur. This organization is engaged in rice production loan, lending for other purposes, input dealership and marketing of palay and milled rice.

From its 80 original members and thirteen thousand eight hundred pesos (P13,800.00) paid up capital, the cooperative has grown in numbers with a total of 645 memberships and increased  its net worth up to P 5.7 million in 2011. However, the present demand of good quality rice posed a big problem on the cooperative. With their obsolete rice drying facility, the cooperative produces low quality rice during rainy season, hence, a need to upgrade their existing drying equipment.

DOST-SEI offers two scholarship programs, the Merit Scholarship Program and RA 7687 Scholarship Program, open to poor, talented and deserving students. These scholarships aim to produce and develop high quality human resources who will steer the Science and Technology (S&T) and Research Development (R&D) efforts in the country.

outreach_2copySome 300 residents of baragay Poblacion, Municipality of Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur, benefited in the Department of Science and Technology (DOST IX) Outreach Program, which was held at the Municipal Gym of Tigbao on July 29, 2010.

 

The activity was part of 2010 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) – Regional Celebration in Pagadian City on July 26-30, 2010.

Specifically, the DOST IX outreach program involved feeding of DOST-developed / supported nutritious food products to the mal-nourished and under-privilege children in Tigbao.  Some 30 underweight children with ages 6 months to 3 years old were fed with Nutri-Booster.  The Nutri-Booster is a DOST-SETUP-assisted project in Pagadian City, owned and managed by Mr. Concordio L. Bolusan.   The product, which is made of rice, banana, mungbean, and soybean is now commercially available in various local grocery outlets in Zamboanga, Pagadian, Dipolog and other places.

 The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST IX) is calling interested applicants / proponents to submit project/research proposals for funding under its Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Program.

The GIA program is designed to contribute to productivity improvement and quality of life of Filipinos by generating and promoting appropriate technologiesand strengthening the participation of various S&T sectors in research and development (R&D).

The program has three (3) categories:

1) Research and Development (R&D) - this is open to academe (state colleges and universities, private universities), government and non-government organizations.  The priority areas for research are food, agriculture & fisheries, environment (including climate change), alternative energy, health & medical products, and information and communications technology (ICT), and window for innovation;

The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST IX) announces the qualifiers of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS)scholarship examination administered on November 06, 2010 at the Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology (ZSCMST). Of the 20,233 applicants nationwide, 1,114 successfully passed the screening, 19 of which are from Region 9.

The qualifiers are: 1) Zamboanga City: Alban, Jeshrun Ephraim Camero,  Alfad, Meella Rixsa Aming, Nuruddin, Ahmad Al-Abidin Sanusi , and Sarapuddin, Rajiv Burahan; 2) Zamboanga del Norte / Dipolog City: Abello, Christine Lyka Cacanog, Barluado, Maye Maxinne Villoria, Bojos, Ena Margarita Osano,  Edquila, Kathleen Mae Valleja, Laygo, Colleen Cleo Bulac, Ruda, Rosal May Gomera, Trani, Rova Maye Adrias, Ualat, Shaina Lou Bael, Velasco, Dwight Louis Hamoy, and Villarin, Ailyn Quintero; 3) Zamboanga Sibugay:  Campos, Twina Jame Carballo; and 4) Zamboanga del Sur/ Pagadian City: Englisa, Ronna Christma Caalim,Gasalatan, Armarie Mendoza, Mainit, Shaina Chelsey Tirol, and  Narciso, Mindette Love Mirafuente.

SETUP is a nationwide strategy to assist micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in adopting technological innovations to improve their operations and thus boost their productivity and competitiveness.

Specifically, the program enables firms to address their current technical problems; get free technical advice from the consultants; avail of technical training courses for workers/employees; acquire new equipment to mechanize and/or improve production line; avail assistance on product packaging and labeling; standardize and improve the quality of products; and be competitive.

The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST IX) announces its successful renewal of ISO 9001:2008 Certification following a two (2) day reassessment and surveillance audit conducted on January 17 & 18, 2011 in Zamboanga City.

The certification (CIP/4068/07/12/552), dated 03 February 2011, and is valid until 02 February 2014, was issued by the Certification International Philippines, Incorporated (CIPI), an internationally renowned ISO certifying body.

The certification states that DOST IX operates a Quality Management System (QMS) conforming to the ISO 9001:2008. The DOST IX’s business processes such as the 1) Provision of Technology Transfer Services2) Science Promotion3) S&T Information Dissemination; and 4) S&T Scholarships are well covered by the recertification.

Some 50 participants representing four (4) youths organizations in Molave, Zamboanga del Sur actively participated in the Training on Novelty Candles conducted by the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST IX), in collaboration with the Municipal Agriculture Office - Department of Agriculture IX (MAO-DA) and local government unit (LGU) of Molave.

Doing this can help decrease our chances of getting diabetes and being overweight or obese.  Some might think that artificial sweeteners are the best solution to curb our love affair with sugar, others disagree. Artificial sweeteners do eliminate the high calories and carbohydrates associated with sugar, however, many believe that these alternatives are unsafe and are actually worse than sugar. So is there yet another alternative available?

The issue becomes more intense as almost everyone can feel its effects.   The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) believes that staying informed about climate change and supporting significant efforts and strategies to slow its progress are things everyone can do.

The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST-IX) actively participated in the National Nutrition Month Celebration this July. One of the highlights of the month-long event was the conduct of Nutrition Fair in Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte on July 23, 2009.


The activity was organized and spearheaded by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) with support of the Joint Regional Nutrition Committee and ZP Anti Hunger Task Force (RNC-AHTF). Various government line agencies provided products and services related to food, health and nutrition to the local constituents.

In its effort to help address the increasing incidence of malnutrition in the country, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) conducted a nationwide Technology Forum on FNRI-developed food products rich in vitamin A and iron.
