Every 2 years, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) holds its nationwide Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) event all over the country to recognize the indispensability of Filipino inventors.

This year, the DOST-IX RICE will be held on November 14-16 during the agency’s Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) celebration, where the agency’s leading programs, services and technologies will be featured.

The Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST-IX) had recently received the Government Best Practice Recognition 2017 (GBPR) from the Development Academy of the Philippines.

The GBPR seeks to recognize successful and validated practices demonstrated by all public sector organizations, and provides a platform to showcase and promote these practices as a way to foster knowledge sharing and to contribute in sustaining performance results in the entire bureaucracy.

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Science High School System (DOST-PSHS) will hold its National Competitive Examinations (PSHS-NCE) for the selection and screening of scholars on Saturday, October 22 this year.

Examination locations and venues are as follows:

In observance of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST) has chosen to do more than just fly a color.

Led by the department's DOST-IX Gender And Development (GAD) Focal Point System, the agency has began to get the word out and push back against the disease through a campaign using today's most powerful information channel - social media.

Aside from wearing pink on all Fridays of October, the department has committed to the release of info graphics about risk factors, signs, symptoms, and other helpful details about the disease - one for each Friday of the month.

As of 2013, The Department of Health has recorded a total of 6,938 mortalities in the Philippines, with 164 of the said cases coming from the Zamboanga Peninsula.

The Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) will hold a Stakeholders’ Forum: Crafting the 2016-2020 FNRI Research and Development (R&D) Agenda on Food and Nutrition on October 22, 2015 at LM Hotel, Tetuan, Zamboanga City.

With the theme “Responding to the Needs of every Juan and Juana for Improved Quality of Life”, the forum seeks to generate ideas, insights and perspectives of our stakeholders towards the development of the 2016-2020 FNRI R&D Agenda in food and nutrition. The R&D agenda aims to stimulate research and the development of innovative interventions to meet the challenges of existing nutrition problems.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has become an indispensable part of everyday life.  Effective use of ICT tools in health care delivery will help   in achieving the goal of governent in providing equitable access to health care in the rural areas.    In line with this, the Department of Science and Technology through the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) has recently approved the  grant of research entitled “ICT Needs Assessment of Rural Health Units (RHUs) in Zamboanga Peninsula”.

According to the Director of the Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research and Development (ZCHRD) Dr. Teresita Montaño, the study will be conducted by Maria Rosthel A. Geonzon and Ricardo B. Garcia both from the Western Mindanao State University - Research and Development  Evaluation Center (WMSU-RDEC). The funding assistance amounting to Four Hundred Fifty One Thousand Seven Hundred Fifteen Pesos (PhP451,715.00) is made possible through the strong collaboration of  ZCHRD member institutions in coming up with viable research proposals.

Local media practitioners and information officers of national   government agencies and academic institutions will attend the “2014 NUTRICOMNET-IX Media Forum,” scheduled on November 5, 2014 at the Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City. The event is organized by the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX and the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI).

According to DOST IX Regional Director Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano,   the forum will highlight the 8th National Nutrition Survey (NNS) data on hypercholesterolemia.   Hypercholesterolemia is the presence of high levels of cholesterol in the blood.    The event will also discuss the importance of dietary fiber, calcium and its health benefits and tips on “Living a Healthy Lifestyle”.

Access to potable water is one of the major development concerns of the government. With the aim to make local technology work for the people and to provide practical solutions to the current problems, the Department of Science and Technology-IX will grant 200 units of Ceramic Water Filter to poor families in Zamboanga Peninsula region. The target beneficiaries are selected indigenous people of Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay and Siayan, Zamboangadel Norte.

Initially, some 30 units of locally-developed water filter technology were distributed to the families of Buug Subanen Workers Association during their 1stanniversary celebration held last September 30 in Buug.  DOST IX will give out the remaining units of water filter to other target families within this month.

Cash rewards, research grants and trophies await winners in the search for the well-deserved recipients of the PANTAS and TANGLAW awards. The search is led by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).  

Filipino scientists and researchers, research administrators and institutions that have made exemplary contributions for the advancement of agriculture, aquatic and natural resources (AANR) in the Philippines are welcome to submit their entries.

Some 400 graduating high school students attended the 1st S&T Scholarship Roadshow conducted by the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. IX (DOST-IX) last September 17-28, 2012. The lead science agency has covered over 30 municipalities in Region IX. This intervention was a way of bringing S&T services particularly scholarship grants, closer and accessible to far-flung municipalities without scholars for the past three years.

The S&T Scholarship Roadshow aims to promote and orient potential students who may qualify to avail the scholarships offered by DOST.  According to Mr. Martin A. Wee, ARD for Technical Services of DOST-IX and over-all coordinator of S&T scholarship in Region IX, DOST offers two (2) types of scholarships for the undergraduate: the RA 7687 Scholarship, available to poor but talented students and the Merit Scholarship.

The Philippine Science of Youth Science Clubs (PSYSC) is pleased to invite all elementary schools to join the 2012 National Children’s Science Interactive Workshop (NCSIW 2012) on October 22-25, 2012 in Plaza del Norte Hotel and Convention Center, Laoag, Ilocos Norte.

With its theme, “Rise of Energia: Conducting the Hunt and the Access to a Renewable Generation of Energy”, this year’s NCSIW will focus on understanding the fundamental concepts and current trends and breakthroughs in the field of Renewable Energy. NCSIW 2012 also aims to promote research and development among elementary students by showcasing inventions and discoveries of budding student scientists that have impact on the environment.

In line with its efforts to upgrade the capability of the furniture industry in producing quality furniture products, the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office-IX (DOST IX) provided technology interventions to Rockwood Sash and Furnishings located at Coron, Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Rockwood Sash and Furnishings is an offshoot of the reforestation project of the Gargollo brothers that started in 1990. With the 16 hectares mahogany trees ready for gradual and selective harvesting, Rockwood Sash and Furnishings was established to convert these wood products into fine and quality sash and furniture products.

A Bioreactor facility of Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur was recently visited by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary, Dr. Estrella F. Alabastro along with some officials of the central office, research and development councils and institutes, and DOST IX management and staff last 26 September 2009. The visit was part of the Secretary’s 3-day project site tour to the different projects under DOST IX.

PGMA Awards DOST-9 Project Funds to Beneficiaries during the Megayon Festival in Zamboanga del Sur

Mr. Concordio Bulusan of Nutri-Booster Phil. Inc. receives from PGMA the check amounting to P500,000.  Behind PGMA are Hon. Gov. Aurora Cerilles, House Speaker Prospero Nograles, Hon. Congressman Victor Yu (1st District), and Hon. Congressman Antonio H. Cerilles (2nd District).

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo personally awarded the DOST’s Innovation Support Assistance amounting to One Million Pesos (P1,000.000.00) to the three (3) project beneficiaries in Zamboanga del Sur, in time for the celebration of the Megayon Festival, the grandest festival in commemoration of the 56th Anniversary Celebration of the Province of Zamboanga del Sur. The turn-over was held on September 17, 2008 at the Provincial Capitol in Pagadian City.

The said projects include : 1) DOST Small and Medium Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SET-UP) for the Nutri-Booster Philippines Incorporated for the Upgrading of Banana-Enhanced Nutri-Booster Production located at Balangasan, Pagadian City by Mr. Concordio Bolusan; 2) Establishment of Feedmill in Barangay Tinaga, Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur by Mayor Paulino Fanilag, Sr.; and 3) Laboratory Equipment for the Banana Tissue Culture in Pagadian City by Pagadian City Mayor Samuel Co. Aside from DOST projects, PGMA also turned-over project funds from other national government line agencies to the recipients.

Furthermore, in a related event, DOST IX management and staff spearheaded by Dir. Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano participated in the National Government Agencies (NGAs) Night, held in the same venue last September 16, 2008. Dir. Manzano, as President of the Regional Executives Association of Western Mindanao (REAWESMIN) gave the Opening Remarks. (DOST IX PRESS RELEASE).
