Under the program Smarter Approaches to Reinvigorate Agriculture as an Industry in the Philippines (SARAI), the effects of Climate Change in farming, fishing, and even our natural resources will be addressed.
The project, which will run for 3 years was launched by the DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) during the Strategic Industry Science and Technology Program for Agri-Aqua Growth or SIPAG Fiesta last March 2-4, 2016. During this time, SARAI will be implementing various projects on decision-making tools in agriculture to include weather forecasting and new methods in farming.
Several technologies, systems, and products have been implemented in line with SARAI. One of which is the Smarter Pest Identification Technology (SPId Tech), a type of mobile application that has the ability to identify pests in farms through image scanning. After identification, strategies on crop management are also given to farmers.
Other smart farming technology on crop monitoring includes a system in irrigation management based on decision support system. This system determines thelack of soil humidity in crops like rice and corn. Through this, farmers are informed of the impending ‘water stress’ in their crops. Aside from this, the program also has a system that could monitor crop growth and its condition through satellite and unmanned aerial drone technology; all these systems are available for free.
