Lamberto Junk Shop is owned and managed by Mr. Danilo Josol and Mrs. Grace Josol, both public school teachers. As professional teachers, cleanliness and organization is their second nature, and so it is unusual to see them flourish in the junk shop business where “getting dirty” is the name of the game.

The business started out as small junk shop buyer with an initial investment of three hundred thousand pesos (P300,000.00). The shop then had five employees going around Dipolog City looking for recyclable wastes that can be sold to a bigger junk shop. These scraps are glass, plastics, metals and other items. The couple believes in the saying that “where there is trash, there is cash”

With the enormous demand for recycled plastic, the couple took the challenge of taking their enterprise into a higher level. The firm became the waste plastic guru of Dipolog City, and now expanding its reach to other areas of Zamboanga del Norte, taking in as much as half ton of plastic per day.

Cassava is a tuberous edible plant from which cassava chips and flour, breads, a laundry starch, delicacies and even an alcoholic beverage are derived. It has been observed that Cassava flour is now widely used in bakeshops in Zamboanga del Norte, instead of wheat flour.

With the growing demand of cassava flour, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-IX), through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), has granted an innovation assistance to the People’s Officials, Employees and Community Multi-Purpose Cooperative (POEMCO) which is located in the municipality of Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte. The organization has about 160 hectares of area planted with cassava. The cooperative sells the raw cassava to San Miguel Foods Incorporated (SMFI) which is then processed into various products especially animal feeds.

A total of 115 high school graduating studentsfrom Region IX hurdled the highly competitive S&T Scholarship Examination of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) given last September 21, 2014.

DOST IX Regional Director Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano said that out of 1,306 examinees from the region, 115 or 8.8 % passed the qualifying examination. The good news though is that, all the 73 municipalities and cities in the region have produced a DOST scholar.  Republic Act 7687, otherwise known as S&T Scholarship Act, provides for two slots of scholars per municipality in the country.

The following are the qualifiers of the 2015 S&T Scholarships in Region IX:

1Blessing, Turn-Over & Inauguration of Complementary Food Production Facility, March 6, Tungawan, Sibugay. NEDA IX Regional Director and RDC IX Acting Chairperson Teresita Socorro C. Ramos cuts the ceremonial ribbon assisted by Tungawan Municipal Mayor Randy Climaco, DOST IX Regional Director Brenda L Nazareth-Manzano, DOST-CAR Regional Director Julius Sicat and NNC Regional Program Coordinator Maria del Pilar Pamela R. Tarroza.

2013 survey results conducted by the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) reveal that Region IX has high prevalence of both underweight and stunted children aged 0-5.   This age group is very crucial for physical and mental development, thus lack of nutrition during this stage may result to severe health impacts which can continue later in life.

DOST-FNRI, in its response to address the persistent health issues among young kids and to meet the country’s Millennium Development Goal (MDG), has initiated a science and technology (S&T) based interventions to fight malnutrition, dubbed as “DOST PINOY”, (Package for the Improvement of Nutrition Of Young Children).

The interventions aim to reduce the prevalence of under nutrition among 6 months to 35 months old children through production and technology transfer of complementary food blends and snack foods developed by FNRI. Thus, the project “Roll-Out of Complementary Food Production in the Regions” was implemented. Spearheaded by DOST-CAR,the production facility is also being put-up in regions IV-B, Caraga and XII for the first batch of project implemention.
