Goodies Milk Products is a family enterprise which started in 2007 in Dipolog City.  The firm engages in the production and processing of fresh milk and other processed milk products.  As one of the recipients of National Dairy Authority (NDA) program, the firm received cows from New Zealand.  Started with only four (4) cows in 2008, subsequently increased and now the enterprise has a total of 15 cows.  The main products of the firm include fresh milk and milk bars, which have been making very good business for the company.  Among the outlets of the firm are schools, canteens, and pasalubong centers.

The increasing demand for the products encouraged the firm to expand its current production facility through the support of the Department of Science and Technology – Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (DOST-SETUP).  As an initial step in providing technical assistance, DOST-IX conducted a Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) of the firm.  As a result, the project entitled “Upgrading of Processing Facility of Goodies Milk Products” received financial assistance amounting to Four Hundred Twenty Six Thousand Pesos (P426,000.00) to cover the acquisition of needed production equipment such as  1) 1 unit stainless steel table; 2) 1 unit pasteurizer of 80 liter capacity; 3) 1 unit of refilling tank at 120 liter capacity; 4) 1 unit upright freezer; and 5) 1 unit upright chiller.

Profound interest in welding and fabrication works during his college days and the experience gained in the renovation of his mother’s residence, pushed Mr. Rolando O. Tacliad to start business in 2008, named as “Dod’s Metal Works and Fabrication”.  The shop, with an area of 340 sq.m., is located at Barangay Obay, Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte.  The initial equipment used in the operation was provided by Mr. Tacliad’s sister who is based in Germany.  Currently, the firm provides services on metal and iron works to include fabrication of farm machineries, food processing equipment, among others.

With the increasing orders for iron and metals works and being a member of the Zamboanga del Norte Researchers and Inventors Association, Inc., Mr. Tacliad encouraged to expand his business through the Department of Science and Technology – Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (DOST-SETUP).  During the conduct of the Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) of the firm, it was determined that the shop’s main technology gap is the absence of lathe machine.

Started as passion in cake making in 1992, Ms. Lolita T. KRAM’s Food Products, a peanut butter processing SME located at  Padre Ramon Extension, Estaka, Dipolog City, received assistance from the Department of Science and Technology - Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (DOST-SETUP) for their project entitled  “Upgrading of Peanut Butter Processing Facility”.    The innovation system support assistance amounted to One Hundred Twenty Thousand Pesos (P120,000.00).

Low production existing equipment prompted the firm to avail of DOST-IX’s support.  Through the project, the firm is set to acquire two (2) units of peanut grinder, two (2) units of stainless steel table, peanut roaster, and biomass stove.   DOST IX also conducted trainings on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Basic Sanitation and Hygiene to the company’s workforce.  With these interventions, the firm is expected to 1) produce 30 % more than the current production, which will result to 1,008 more peanut butter jars a year;  2) increase sales by 30 %; 3) generate additional employment; 4) improve quality of products through adherence to good manufacturing practices (GMP); and 5) acquire License to Operate from Food and Drug Authority (FDA).

The Office of the Deputy Speaker, MARIA ISABELLE CLIMACO, in close coordination with Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST-IX), distributed a total of 12,000 Ovicidal/Larvicidal (OL) trap kits to 11 barangays in Zamboanga City. Officials of Barangay San Roque, Sta. Maria, Tumaga, Maasin, Recodo, Calarian, Pasonanca, Malagutay, Sinunuc, Tugbungan and Campo Islam attended the orientation/training conducted by the DOST-IX at the Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School (DPLMHS) last August 17. Over 6,000 households in the 11 barangays will benefit from this project. Each of the household received two (2) OL trap kits and a supply of the organic pellets for six (6) months. Barangay coordinators or sanitary inspectors were assigned to monitor and record OL Traps that show positive for the presence of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The data will be used to compute the OL trap index of each barangay, which may serve as an early warning signal to pre-empt any impending dengue outbreaks.
