Special interest in furniture making even at his young age and the experience gained in TESDA furniture training-courses, Mr. Rene Hapona established his furniture shop in 2007 with a very small capitalization, named “Rene Woodcraft and Furniture”, situated at Sta. Clara, Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay.

True to his great hands in woodcraft, Mr. Hapona was recognized as best TESDA alumni in TESDA nationwide search. Mr. Hapona envisioned  to expand market coverage in the next five years  throughout the region, and further penetrate the export market in the next ten years. Currently, the firm produces various designs of wood panel doors, French windows, bed frames, dining set, sala set, office furnitures, cabinets, mouldings, balusters and other woods products.

Inheriting the enterprise from his uncle, the current owner of Ajero Food Industry, Mr. Richard Ajero purchased second-hand equipment to improve the production of the family’s pancit making facility located at New Lituban, Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte. However, the facility was not enough to comply with government standards for producing quality products.

In pursuit of improving product quality, the owner initiated to upgrade his production plant with innovation support assistance of the Department of Science and Technology IX through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (DOST IX – SETUP).

It was with the tasty vision of Ms. Mariles C. Regencia that urged her to put up a bakeshop in 2001. To highlight her avid drive and passion for baking, the owner named it “Care Cakes and Pastries” which she formally opened on January 2002.

It turned out that the bakeshop has drawn a significant number of customers in and out of Turno, Dipolog City. Their delicious cakes and delectable native products have earned the customers’ loyalty and patronage. On top of that, the bakeshop continues to strive for quality service.

The Department of Science and Technology IX (DOST IX) has recently released the innovation system support assistance amounting to Six Hundred Four Thousand and Five Hundred Pesos (Php 604,500.00) project in Isabela City. The project entitled “Upgrading of Bakery Equipment and Facilities” shall benefit the Isabela Seaport Bakery and Restaurants through the DOST’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).

Established in 2008, Isabela Seaport General Merchant has gradually taken its foothold as the native Tausug’s favorite bread and food service in town.  The bakeshop offers sumptuous bread products and tasty local delicacies like junay (spicy peppered rice), waked (sticky rice), pasung and tabid-tabid (a.k.a. chikalang).

In an effort to create local pool  of  talents with skills required by the Information and Communications Technology – Business Process Outsourcing (ICT-BPO),  particularly the mobile application and game development industry,  the Department of Science and Technology - Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO) through the Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP), in collaboration with the Zamboanga ICT Council (ZICT), will  conduct the  1st Training Course on Mobile Application and Game Development on June 17 to July 12, 2013 at Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – IX recently concluded its Scholarship Orientation and Signing of the Scholarship Agreement to the new undegraduate scholars in the four (4) areas within the Zamboanga Peninsula region.

Primarily held on April 19 at the Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City, 38 attendees including the qualifiers and respective parents/legal guardians inked to avail the S&T scholarship program funded by the DOST – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI). Meanwhile, 33 participants joined the Zamboanga Sibugay leg - scholarship session at the Ricomar Pension House and Restaurant, Ipil last April 22. With much vigor from DOST-9, the orientation for the Zamboanga del Norte area preceded on April 23 at D Hotel & Suites, Dipolog City, wherein a total of 68 qualifiers and parents attended. Finally, 66 participants from Zamboanga del Norte counted in to conform the terms and conditions in the scholarship agreement during the conclusive orientation at 4 Queens Resort, Pagadian City on April 25. In a recent study conducted by the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST- FNRI), the Filipino mothers who are exclusively breastfeeding their infants are declining in the Philippines.  In addition, exclusive breastfeeding is practiced by only 8.6 percent of the survey respondents, while a high 55.4 percent feed their children with other milk or in combination with complementary feeding.  This low level of breastfeeding practices for infants and young children is consistent with the high prevalence of malnutrition among 0-5 year age group where 22.2 % and 27.9 % are underweight and stunted, respectively.  Further, the FNRI-DOST survey also shows that among three-month old infants, nine out of 10 were given water as complementary food. Among four-month old infants, two out of 10 were given with sugar. These results fell short of the recommendation that only breast milk should be given to infants before six months.

38 new scholars of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) attended the ongoing Science and Technology Learning Assistance ProgramSummer Enrichment Class, one of the strategies to prepare S&T scholarship recipients to become competitive in college.
